The need for governance
Despite recent issues with unreliable research, climate change is a major challenge for modern society. Government, business and the wider society are all affected and have the responsibility for tackling the problem.
While there is a trickle down of ‘environmental consciousness’ in the business community (thank Al Gore), the Boardroom has, in general, been more focussed on cost as a consequence of energy usage rather than the wider climate issues. Even then the full impact of future energy shortages and legislation is not well understood or given the focus it needs.
Joan Ruddock, minister in the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), said in a speech recently that pending UK legislation ‘……is designed to raise awareness in large businesses – public and private. Particularly at board room level and to encourage a change in behaviour and to ensure that there is investment in new infrastructure’. She highlighted two issues that business need help to address – energy security and climate change. Both issues, while detrimental to the public good, have major implications for business.
